Turn the jar around. Do you see the difference?

Most plant-based spreads are packed with soy, palm oil and E-numbers you’d need a chemistry degree to understand. BonMush starts with just one hero ingredient: locally grown oyster mushrooms. Loaded with natural umami and seriously good on your sandwich.

  • Grown & made in Belgium
  • Umami-licious taste + real bite
  • Real food. Mush food. 🍄

THE PROBLEM ON YOUR PLATE

DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT’S IN YOUR SPREAD?

Every week, more than 6 out of 10 Belgian families reach for a spread for their sandwich. Sounds harmless, right? Until you turn the jar around and read the ingredients. Soy protein isolate, maltodextrin, palm oil, a handful of E-numbers. Nothing you really recognize, until somewhere at the very bottom you might find a trace of what you thought was the main ingredient.

Even the plant-based versions you choose because you want to eat more consciously are often packed with ultra-processed stuff. You replace meat with chemistry. That wasn’t really the plan.

And the strange thing is: you feel it. That vague doubt in the supermarket aisle. “Is this really better?” You’re not crazy.

🧪

ENDLESS INGREDIENT LISTS

Many spreads contain 15 to 20+ ingredients, including emulsifiers, thickeners and flavor enhancers you would never find in a real kitchen. You buy a “chicken salad” that barely contains chicken, or a “tuna salad” that is mostly soy and starch.

😞

A TASTE THAT DISAPPOINTS

Maybe you once tried a plant-based spread and it tasted like wet cardboard with a spoonful of mayonnaise. You wondered: “Are they all like this?” And honestly? That frustration is justified. Many brands compensate for a lack of quality with sugar, salt and artificial flavorings.

🌍

PALM OIL AND ANONYMOUS SOY

The base of many spreads? Cheap oils and imported soy protein from far-away countries. Good for margins, less good for your body and certainly not for the planet. “Plant-based” becomes an empty marketing claim — because where are the actual plants?

SO WHAT SHOULD I CHOOSE THEN?

You want variety in your lunchbox. You want to eat more consciously. But it feels like a minefield: everything is too expensive, too chemical, too tasteless, or simply takes too much time. So you fall back on the familiar slice of chicken deli meat — not because you really love it, but because it’s easy.

Turn the jar around.

One look at the label tells the whole story.

We’re not here to convince you with marketing talk. Just place the two labels side by side and decide for yourself.

OUR STORY
FROM WEST-FLEMISH BUTCHERY TO PLANT-BASED PIONEER

BonMush was born from a family story you couldn’t make up. Not because Caroline grew up in a butcher shop, but because she saw up close how the system works. Her in-laws ran a traditional West-Flemish butcher shop — if anyone knows what good meat tastes like, it’s her. But she also saw the other side: the impact on the planet, on our health, and on the system itself. So she decided to do things radically differently. Her weapon of choice? The oyster mushroom. Locally grown, circular by nature, and naturally packed with umami — that deep, savory taste you normally only find in great meat. No imitation. No “fake meat”. Just an incredible ingredient that stands on its own.

Everything you want to know

Does it really taste like steak tartare / tuna salad?

The honest answer: it doesn’t taste identical, and that’s not our goal either. It tastes UMAMI-LICIOUS — surprisingly richer, fuller and more savoury than most people expect. The texture, the bite, the flavour: it’s all there. Many customers tell us it reminds them of a good steak tartare, but lighter to digest and without that vague aftertaste of processed meat.

What’s so special about oyster mushrooms?

Oyster mushrooms are often called “the steak of the vegetable world.” Naturally, they bring a meaty texture and a deep umami flavour — that savoury, full taste dimension you normally only find in meat, cheese or fermented foods. On top of that, oyster mushrooms are naturally rich in protein and fibre, and low in calories. And they grow incredibly fast with minimal water and land use. Better for you, better for the planet. 🍄

Is BonMush suitable for kids?

Absolutely. In fact, many parents use our spreads as a “sneaky” way to get more vegetables into lunchboxes. No artificial additives, no palm oil, no hidden allergen traps. Just a tasty, nutritious spread that kids enjoy eating — without even realizing they’re eating mushrooms. Win-win.

Where can I buy BonMush?

You can find our spreads at Colruyt, Delhaize, Carrefour, Spar, Okay, and selected independent stores across Flanders and Brussels. In the refrigerated section, with the spreadable salads — exactly where you’d expect them. Tip: check the plant-based shelf or simply between the regular sandwich spreads. We’re in both places.

Do I need to be vegan to eat BonMush?

No. Absolutely not. BonMush is for anyone who wants to upgrade their sandwich from time to time with something that tastes good and feels right. You don’t have to “be” anything — not vegan, not vegetarian, not flexitarian. Just someone who believes that good food and conscious choices can go perfectly together. Cheese on Monday, something new on Tuesday: BonMush. Simple as that.
